Scary indeed! Unless you've taken self-defense courses or have a license to carry a gun, you are virtually, defenseless. At the very least, carrying Mace® pepper spray provides you with a good chance of escape, in case bad luck comes your way. 

Pepper spray is legal, inexpensive and easy to carry. Choose a product that you will want to carry with you at all times, is of reasonable size and is low profile. You do not want to advertise the fact that you carry pepper spray since a huge benefit is in its use as a surprise factor.
